We cannot discuss obesity in the same terms when it deals with children as it relates to adults. Some researchers avoid the word “obesity” altogether in an effort to avoid stigmatizing individuals. Others use the term “childhood obesity” to speak of a general phenomenon. Nevertheless, obesity is indeed a problem among young people, no matter what terminology you choose to employ.

Besides the obvious psychological issues that children afflicted with obesity often have to deal with, childhood obesity can cause numerous physical health problems. One of the biggest concerns in recent years has been the rising number of children afflicted with type 2 diabetes – a disease that previously mainly afflicted adults.

In the course of the last two decades, the statistics of children and adult afflicted with this disease have risen to fifty percent. Today, nearly thirty percent of all adults and twenty five percent of all children struggle with obesity.

What’s more, children who are obese often develop into obese adults. Parallel to the increase in obesity has been the increase in type 2 diabetes, also known as non insulin dependent diabetes.

Throw obesity in to the equation, and this type of diabetes can be very difficult to treat. It can even cause the body to develop an insulin resistance.

Diabetes 2 is not the only physical health issue related to obesity. For children afflicted with severe weight problems, they can contact gall bladder disease, liver disease, sleep apnea, and may run the risk of high cholesterol.

Childhood Obesity On The Rise

Obesity in children has doubled for children between the ages of two and five since the 1970s. Alarming is an understatement; this is traumatic. Toddlers should not be overweight and according to an article I read today, nearly half of Americas children will be obese by the end of the decade. What could be the cause: accessibility to junk food and not enough exercise. But it’s not just America having this problem; every country in the world is having to deal with this epidemic.

If a child has two obese parents, chances are they will be obese due to heredity. Children watch and learn alot from their parents. If the parents do not eat balanced diets and/or get any exercise, the child may pick up those habits. We as parents need to set good eating and exercising examples for our children so they understand the importance of doing the right things for your body.

In today’s society, life has become much easier and as a result lazier. With TV, computers and video games, kids don’t spend as much time outside. Families don’t spend that much time at the dinner table together; the faster dinner gets on the table, the better. Home cooked family meals are quickly disappearing.

Another sobering fact about an obese child is all the health problems they will experience at a young age. Type 2 diabetes, liver diseases, heart disease, high blood pressure, and many more are supposed to be found in adults, not children. But there are more cases of these health problems showing up in children.

Parents need to pay attention to what their children are eating, not only at home, but also when they are away. We need to instill good eating habits early and set examples ourselves. Don’t buy foods with high fat content, sugar and artificial preservatives. It’s better to make cookies than to buy them from the store. Take time to make dinner, but don’t try to do it every night. Order out every once in a while.

We can change the future. Let’s help our children live long, healthy lives.

Cause Of Childhood Obesity Explained

Many people believe that the cause of childhood obesity is due to over eating and laziness and to an extent they are right but the main cause of childhood obesity are two reasons. The child’s DNA and their parents. If people in the child's family have been struggling with weight gain for most of their life then the genes in that child will make them more susceptible to follow the same pattern, but that can be prevented by healthy eating and exercise which is where the parents come in. Children imitate their parents behaviour so if the parents were to eat healthily and live active lifestyles the child is sure to follow but in this day and age that is not the case and because more adults are going down the road of obesity more children are following them and ultimately suffering at the same hand of fate as their parents although it could easily be prevented!

Parents have the most influence on their child's life, they have the power to show the child that over eating and that lack of exercise is not acceptable in a young person’s life and this is the cause of obesity problems later on in life. Obesity has some dreadful side affects and day to day life can be very unpleasant and simple tasks such as climbing stairs, taking a shower and other general things take more time and more effort because of the extra weight. This is even worse for a child, they need to be active and have fun!

The causes of childhood obesity are not so severe that obesity can be avoided! If you we teach oour children how to live an active and healthy lifestyle there is no reason why they should become obese even if they’re family are full of obese people! Obesity is a cause and effect disease it is caused by several things over eating being the man one and the effects are horrible which complicated medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease! Childhood obesity can be avoided so lets try and do that, lets avoid it and help our children lead happy healthy lives with no health problems or emotional setbacks!

As a child, do you remember being given a lot of food and being told to gulp down every single bit of it? Have you encountered parents who think that fat children make healthy and happy children? These are among the reasons for the rise of child obesity cases worldwide.

What is obesity? Obesity means having too much fat content in the body. To describe it scientifically, obesity is characterized by having a weight measurement and body mass index well above the norm. It results from high amounts of calorie intake and very little expenditure of energy.

Obesity is a rapidly growing problem not only in the United States but all over the world. A recent study has shown that in the United States alone, 65% of the population is overweight and obese. All around the world, an estimated three hundred million adults are obese. Fifteen percent of United States' child population has also been reported overweight. Around the world, an estimated twenty-two million children aged five and below are overweight.

What causes child obesity? Like any other medical condition, child obesity may be caused by a number of factors, most often in combinations. Obesity may either be: acquired from external factors, hereditary, caused by psychological factors, or secondary to a present condition.

1.Acquired. This may be a result from poor eating habits and a lack of physical activities to burn off the calorie obtained from previously ingested food help contribute to a spike in weight gain. 2.Hereditary. Children born of obese parents are more prone to being overweight and obese themselves. This is usually brought about by shared unhealthy eating habits observed from the parents. 3.Psychological factors. Obesity may have come secondarily to children overeating to cope with stress and/or negative emotions such as: boredom, anger, sadness, anxiety or depression. 4.Illnesses. Various conditions such as hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, depression and other neurological concerns may lead to obesity and weight gain in children.

Are there any complications? If a child continues to indulge in poor eating habits and does not engage in physical activities to burn off the calories, childhood obesity may develop into life-threatening complications including: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, sleeping problems, cancer, and other health concerns. Overweight kids are likely to grow up as overweight adults as well.

Most often than not, obese children get subjected to teasing and public humiliation. To some point, it even leads to harassment, violence and even discrimination by his family. This causes children to grow up with really low self-esteem and depression.

What can be done to prevent childhood obesity? It is never a good idea to ignore signs of obesity in children. Intervention should be taken to establish good health before your child's obesity worsens.

Set an achievable weight-loss goal. Your goals shouldn't be too far-fetched and should still allow room for normal growth and development. Start small, so as not to overwhelm or discourage your child with the changes you're planning to implement. Manage your child's diet. Keep a journal or diary of your child's daily food. This helps come up with a more accurate dietary assessment. This food journal should be as detailed as possible. Set aside time for physical activities. Exercise is necessary for continuous weight loss. This also helps redistribute body fat into muscles. Again, start small to avoid discouraging the child. Build up exercise time slowly for better results.

In conclusion, child obesity is a condition that is fully reversible. The best thing to do to avoid this kind of dilemma for your child is to set a good example. Show them how good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle help you enjoy life more. This is the best way to show them you care for them too.

With obesity rates continuing to soar in in the United States it is no surprise that we are seeing a rising number of overweight and obese children. But precisely what is it that results in childhood obesity?

As is often the case there is no one cause of childhood obesity and there are various different things that account for obesity in our children.

For example, it is often the case that a child whose parents are overweight or obese will also be overweight and this suggests that there could well be an inherited or genetic factor to obesity. However, despite the fact that this is an area that is currently being investigated, no clear genetic link has been discovered yet and it is thought far more likely that it is the eating habits within the family that cause obesity rather than genetics.

In recent years there has been a marked shift in eating habits with fast food restaurants springing up on every corner, junk food available just about everywhere and the shelves of our supermarkets lined with 'convenience' foods that are usually extremely high in sugar. The days of home cooked meals are far behind us in many homes and have been superceded by microwave meals or take-away food. In fact, many parents are now opting to take their children out for a hamburger rather than to prepare a meal at home not just because it is easier than cooking but also because it saves a lot of washing up!

Additionally, we have experienced a very marked fall in activity levels for many groups of children, fuelled in no small degree by the introduction of homecomputers, video games consoles and now the ever present mobile phone. Not surprisingly, as activity levels have fallen so our children have also lost their natural ability to burn up the calories gained from eating an increasing amount of junk food.

The Internet, television, magazines and other forms of media also play an important role as they all but dominate our childrens' lives and fast food, junk food and confectionary manufacturers are not slow in jumping onto this particular bandwagon and take full advantage of the advertising opportunity provided by the media. A lot of people argue that commercials have done more to encourage the increase in child obesity that just about anything else in recent years.

There are also many social factors at play in today's world and a significant number of children nowadays simply eat as a result of boredom. They will also turn to the comfort of food whenever they are angry, stressed, anxious or depressed.

Today a great deal of research is being aimed at the causes of child obesity and its treatment and much of this is focused on solving the problem using diet and exercise once confronted with an obese child. However, with childhood obesity continuing to increase at such a disturbing rate, perhaps it is now time to attack the roots of the problem and to prevent our children from getting obese in the first place.
