If you're like me, when you go out in public you're probably noticing that kids are getting fatter and fatter. It can be a tense subject, but there is no denying that the size of America's children has been steadily growing in recent years, and this trend has dangerous implications on these children's health. When you consider how a child's body works, you know that they have very fast metabolisms, burn a lot of energy, and generally have no problem maintaining a healthy weight. It takes some very bad habits for a child to become obese, yet this is growing more common as time goes on.
The first step in solving this problem is recognizing who's to blame. It's not the children - they are never going to be concerned with their health, and don't know any better. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child is being raised with healthy eating and exercising habits to reduce their risk of unnecessary illnesses in their lives. By making sure that your child is eating right and leading an active lifestyle you can make an extraordinary impact on their future. Countless serious diseases can be avoided by a healthy lifestyle, and it is never easier to adopt one than when a person is young. Parents must realize that they have to step up and take a constructive, active role in the health of their children.

Children are no different than everyone else in that their diet is extremely important to their weight and health. The saying "you are what you eat" is true in man ways. Your body takes what you consume, breaks it down, and absorbs the ingredients. Those ingredients then are used to burn as energy, or become integrated into your body in other ways. Children must have special attention given to their diet. Since they are just now beginning to develop and are growing, their body needs a solid base of nutrition from which to build a healthy body. As a parent, you can create that. For their snacks, fix flavorful fruits and vegetables, and find ways to incorporate these healthy treats into their daily diet. Fruits are good because many kids like them, they are good sources of energy, they come in all varieties, and they have so many nutrients. If your child associates these foods with snacking, then keeping control of their health, fitness, and weight will be much simpler for the rest of their lives.

Children also need a healthy amount of activity and exercise in their lives as well. - Playing video games and watching TV are completely normal parts of being a child, but allowing your kid to become so consumed with them that they never get outside is completely unhealthy. Playing and running around outside are the most common ways that children get most of their exercise, and unfortunately today most children don't seem to get outside much anymore. To help encourage your child to get up off of the couch, go outside with them! Play games with them, ride bikes! You can even teach them sports! Games like tennis, baseball, hackey sack, soccer, basketball, these are all great and fun activities that can get your child moving! Playing a game of baseball with your kid may not seem like very much, but you're instilling a healthy mindset and associating "exercise" with "fun" that will follow them all throughout their adult lives!

Remember that, as a parent, you are responsible for your child's health and well being. The biggest mistake a parent can make is by being a poor role model for them. Because of this, taking a more active stance on physical fitness in your own life is often the most powerful way you can influence your child. It's also important that you do not ignore your child's diet and exercise - this is the mistake most commonly made by parents. You may think that whatever you feed them will work, but that is not the case. With just a little effort, you can pick out healthy foods they will love, and change their lives for the better. The bottom line is that your child's health rests in your hands, and you have the power to help mold them into healthy, active adults and you can reduce their risk of debilitating health-related illnesses.

Childhood Obesity In Our Youth

Seeing a child abused is one of the worst sights a mother can endure, so why is making your child obese any different? Childhood obesity is on the rise as well as adulthood obesity so why are we all concentrating on adults getting slimmer when it should be children that are our main focus. An obese child is something that cannot go unaddressed. The child will have some serous problems in his life if he is not made to loose this weight. He will be unhappy and unfit for the rest of his life if no one takes charge, how I he supposed to know any difference he is a child, it is the parents responsibility to make sure that the child gets better!

A child is less likely to be obese due to health problems and although genetics play a part in his obesity the lifestyle of his family contributes most to his disease. To be straightforward most childhood obesity stems from an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. Although in this day and age being overweight is nothing of a surprise with junk food, takeaways and sweets everywhere you go and convenience not health is on everyone’s mind! Not to mention that most children would rather sit in and watch television or play their console games than go out and play! Exercise is no longer a part of children’s routine, they are lucky if they get two hours of exercise at school and at home it is non existent. The National Diet and Nutrition survey in 2000 showed that 40-69% of children did not get the one hour a day exercise that is recommended and there is concern that this number has increased.

Childhood obesity can be sorted if worked on from a young age, we do not want to have to watch our children getting bullied at school for being grossly overweight, or getting operations to prevent them from eating as much. We need to show our children to eat sensibly and we need to get them active. Most children copy examples from their parents so if we were to eat fresh fruit and vegetables then there is no reason why they can’t. To help prevent childhood obesity try to eliminate a lot of the sweet stuff in the house and replace it with nutritional foods such as fruit, and low fat alternatives.

As well as an increasing mortality childhood obesity adds to the likelihood of contracting chronic diseases and we need to prevent this, we need to show our children that being overweight is not the life that they should be living and parents should buckle down and get their children eating properly or else obesity will lead us all into a recipe for disaster.

Childhood Obesity Solutions

Obesity is a growing health problem that more people face now than ever before. And childhood obesity is becoming an ever growing problem, not only in the developed countries of the world, but in the developing countries as well. And the main culprit of growing teenage obesity is junk food. When focusing on childhood obesity solutions, we should look at how to move away from junk food.

However, it’s not exactly something that we can get away from, and it is also the reason why developing countries are now facing teenage obesity problems. The fast food culture of the West has been steadily spreading throughout the world to other countries. Junk food is now quickly replacing those nutritious foods which used to be staples of these developing countries' diets, and children and teenagers are most affected by these radical cultural changes.

More and more children and teenagers across the world are succumbing to the fast food and junk food culture and letting go of their hold on the good, wholesome foods which helped keep their forebears fit and healthy.

So how is a person to stop this rising tide of childhood obesity? What solutions are available to us? There really is no simple answer to this problem, and it is not always something that can be tackled at the home level, or even at the school level.

The sad, fundamental problem of teenage obesity comes down to one or two things, mainly that of junk foods and fast foods, which are the main core of it. We need to deal with these types of foods, maybe even look to eliminate them completely from our diets. Such overly processed, and overly starchy/greasy/sugary foods are simply not healthy for anyone, let alone a teenager.

That’s one of the main issues. The other part of the problem of childhood obesity stems from the increasing lack of physical exercise of any sort. Technological advances have made it all but obsolete for people to physically shift their bodies. Most of us can stay in the same room, in the same chair, for an entire day, and still have our entire lives revolve around us.

Children and teenagers of yesteryear were undeniably more active during the daylight hours, which is why teenage obesity was not such a problem. If they weren’t helping around the house or the farm or some such thing, they would either be playing outdoors and socializing, or they would be doing some kind of activity which necessitated the constant movement of their bodies -- regularly and frequently.

Ultimately however, childhood obesity can only be dealt with by the teenagers who suffer from this problem themselves. They can however be supported and guided on to the right path by those who know better, and who are in a position to help them. The problem of childhood obesity can be overcome, it just requires a little push and a shove to get them jump-started.

Overweight children often suffer at school from teasing about their appearance and stereotypes regarding their character, due to preconceptions that overweight children are "lazy" or "have no feelings".

They are often subjected to exclusion by their peers, which can affect their emotional well-being.

Many obese children are so embarrassed by their bodies that they try and disguise the problem by wearing oversized but unflattering clothes.

They are also reluctant to take part in any sports, particularly swimming, where they feel vulnerable and exposed.

This avoidance of physical activity is an obvious compounding of the problem, as the child's health will decline further and they may become increasingly isolated and become depressed.

Childhood obesity is medically far more serious than most parents realise. Plus, many parents do not realise how overweight children are. Over 40 percent of parents of overweight children are misguided in their belief that their children are within the average weight range.

Many incorrectly assume that childhood obesity is 'baby fat' and that the child will grow out of it. Overweight children are usually found in families where one or both parents are overweight.

This is generally because the family consume too much "junk" food, rather than eating fresh, nutritionally balanced meals, combined with a sedentary lifestyle spent watching TV and playing computer games, rather than doing physical, outdoor activities.

Children should be encouraged from an early age to live a healthy and active lifestyle. However, the parents are the main role models for any child. So, the parents must take responsibility for the health and well being of their child.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that the child is the one that has to bear the consequences of the actions, or inaction, of the parents. It is the child that has to put up with the long-term social and health issues, through no fault of its own.

Although childhood obesity is a growing problem, it is a mistake to focus just on 'overweight', unhealthy kids. We need to be looking at the family as a whole, especially the parents and keep in mind the causes of childhood obesity.
